I came across a survey on SharePoint conduct by Global 360 inc, titled "SharePoint in the Enterprise: Best Practices Survey 2010 and 2011". It has tonnes of findings, but what interested me the most was the usage patterns of SharePoint in organizations. The following figure reveals the various uses of SharePoint on organizations, and how they have shifted between August 2010 and January 2011.
Whereas a couple of years ago, SharePoint was mainly used as a document and file repository, this study suggests that uses are now uniformly spread over its various uses. The other finding that caught my eye were the main challenges in SharePoint deployment. Â
We can see that one of the main challenges faced in SharePoint is end user adoption and training. This is understandable, since SharePoint remains more an IT department product, rather than an end user focused product. Although SharePoint 2011 has ironed out some of the UI problems of earlier versions, the complexity remains, which is a put off for end users. In response to a further survey question, 62% respondents felt SharePoint does not deliver a great end user experience out of the box, and needs additional in house design and development to make it usable. This is a great disincentive for SMBs looking to implement ECM and collaboration software because they don't have the requisite IT resources or time. For this reason, web based sharepoint alternatives remain a better choice for SMBs, as they deliver a much better experience out of the box, and all solutions from the web 2.0 generation, have been created with the end user in mind. Â
