I came across an interesting article on CMSWire, predicting SharePoint trends for 2011. Specifically, what interested me was the conceptualization of traditional ECM systems, SharePoint, web collaboration software like Google Apps and HyperOffice, and modern social platforms like Facebook. The model is as follows:- The model is a great illustration of how some systems are document centric, or static. The information produced as a result of collaborative effort, is a discrete packet of information, a document, which will not change much once it is finalized. On the other hand, there are "conversation centric" systems, where the collaborative effort produces a constant stream of low volume information. The author has preferred to categorize online collaboration systems or "sharepoint alternatives" as document centric systems targeted towards external parties. I am not sure i quite agree with that. Increasingly these systems are finding their way into the enterprises because of their ease of use.
