Going by recent Gartner predictions, SharePoint could be as popular as iPhone as an application development platform by 2015 with up to 20,000 applications. Currently, the add ons vary from simple calendars, to sophisticated plugins dedicated to specific verticals. Leaving aside Africa and China, Gartner estimates that SharePoint is used in 50% of the organizations around the globe. The main benefit users see in SharePoint is that they can wrap multiple applications into a single one. It may not perform each specific function perfectly, but like a Swiss army knife, it can perform multiple functions.

However, Gartner found that as more plugins are added on top of SharePoint, the expenses are expected to climb high.

Small businesses, which do not have highly specific needs, but need horizontal tools like email, document collaboration, project management etc will find that sharepoint alternatives bring more functionality out of the box. Larger firms, and firms with very specific application needs may see the benefit of wrapping specific tools with horizontal tools in a SharePoint environment.
